KANATA- The Ontario Government plans to eventually eliminate natural gas in Ontario and force homeowners to convert to expensive electric heat systems instead. This idea was exposed as part of the disruptive climate change plan that was leaked earlier this week by the Globe and Mail.
76% of Ontarians currently rely on natural gas to heat their homes. Now, Kathleen Wynne and the Ontario Government want to cut off this affordable and clean source of energy and force Ontarians to pay $3,000 more a year to heat their homes with electricity. This annual electricity cost will be in addition to the $4,500 it will cost to retrofit a home from natural gas.
“I am appalled that the Ontario Government has even formulated an idea such as this”, said Jack MacLaren, Member of Provincial Parliament for Carleton-Mississippi Mills. “It highlights just how out-of-touch this Government is. Many Ontarians use natural gas as the energy to live their lives and maintain high living standards. Natural gas is clean and affordable. This plan does not make any sense when we have people who are in need of help. As a caring society, we have a moral obligation to help those who cannot help themselves, including those with autism, mental health, and struggling seniors. We have our priorities wrong when we think the environment is more important than the people”.
